Why We Need Supplements with More Vitamin D

Vitamin D

You may not know this, but people with dark skin are fifteen times more likely to be deficient in Vitamin D. This is especially true for our community. Four out of five are Vitamin D deficient compared to one in three white Americans. And whether you are living in an urban or rural part of the country, studies have shown that we have an eighty percent likelihood of being Vitamin D deficient.

The Role Of Vitamin D

Your body relies on Vitamin D for energy, joint health, and mobility. And your levels of Vitamin D can affect your overall health and mental well-being.  When you are deficient in Vitamin D, there is typically a higher increase and risk of colon, prostate, and breast cancer, as well as diabetes and hypertension. Studies show that people with darker complexions are typically at the highest risk for all of these diseases.

Am I Vitamin D Deficient?

While it is universally understood that Vitamin D is essential for our overall health, many supplements do not meet the necessary requirements of Vitamin D for us. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with a health practitioner to determine your Vitamin D levels.

Not All Supplements Are Created Equal

To understand the importance of taking the right supplement for your ethnicity and complexion we can use Vitamin D requirements as an example. According to FDA guidelines, a supplement taken by a white American only needs to have 600 IUs of Vitamin D, while a daily supplement for African-Americans should have an FDA-recommended daily dose of 2000 IUs of Vitamin D.
